SOUTHKILL
SOUTHKILL
IS:
John
Dudley – Drums/Samples
Jason Kerr – Guitar/Vocals
SOUTHKILL can
simply be described as an odd couple. Coming
from opposite corners of the world, Guitarist Jason Kerr (Dunedin, NZ) and John
Dudley (Syracuse, NY) the two met through a classified ad in the Washington
City Paper. Bound together by only a few common musical interests, the two
began experimenting as a two-piece in 2001 and gradually developed a sound that
combines their vastly different influences.
The result is what one friend of the band described as being struck in
the stomach by a “velvet hammer” of pounding rhythms, while being swept away
by a “storm surge of all-encompassing guitars.”
Others just feel its like standing at the end of the runway with a fully
laden jumbo jet lifting off into the stratosphere. SOUTHKILL first
presented the results of their experiment to live audiences in late 2001 and
have shared the stage with the likes of Washington, DC’s Carlsonics and Pines
of Nowhere as well as Hamilton, ON’s Kitchens & Bathrooms.
BEFORE THERE WAS SOUTHKILL
Prior to re-locating to Washington, DC, Jason Kerr played
guitar in the New Zealand post-depression outfit, My Deviant Daughter.
Jason also worked with Dino Karlis and Neil Phillips of High
Dependency Unit on an untitled recording project. He also has worked with
the infamous Nigel Bunn.
John
Dudley was a founding member of Glitter of Cohoes, and recorded and
toured with Hail Mary. In John’s previous life, he was the lead
vocalist for the indie rock quartet Carbondale and Houston hardcore band,
Vice Grip.
PRODUCTION
VALUES
SOUTHKILL’s debut self-titled EP was
captured live on to two inch analog tape by Phil Manley (Trans Am & Golden)
with assistance from Nikhil Ranade at Washington, DC’s National Recording
Studio. The final cut was then personally delivered to Dale Cotton for mastering
at York Street Studios, Auckland, New Zealand. Better
believe it.
